New Weed and Seed Office and Huntington Police Department Field Office Cut Ribbon to Officially Open

Huntington, WV (HNN) - Huntington Police Chief Skip Holbrook cut the ribbon to officially opening the new Weed and Seed Office and Huntington Police Department Field Office at the Barnett Center located at 1524 10th. Ave. in Huntington on Saturday morning.

The program came about from a $1,000,000 grant that was awarded in October from the US Department of Justice Weed and Seen Initiative. The money is scheduled to come over a five year period..
 
The new center is much more than a garden center for the community. Currently there is computer technology center, a dance studio, a multi purpose room, pool tables, ping pong tables, a lending library. meeting rooms and conference room facilities.
 
Part of the building will house the Huntington Police Department Canine Unit, A bike patrol is also planned to operate from there. There will an emphasis on after school programs.
 
The community garden is already in bloom with colorful flowers. Free weekly garden classes will be offered.
 
Other parts of the program include neighborhood revitalization with removing dilapidated structures and improving the looks of current neighborhoods.
 
The theme for Saturday was "Get To Know Your Neighbor," There was a community picnic and information available from various agencies. A lot of people were talking with one another and enjoying the entertainment.
