Hillbilly Hotdogs already made a five pound hamburger called the Big Bad Bubba's Singlewide. The new ten pounder is called the Doublewide named by Dave Lavender a Herald Dispatch writer.

A crew of five were working in the kitchen making three of the restaurant's first ten pound burgers. The first one was a a carry out order from twelve hearty men at Conway Freight Company. The second one was a celebration hamburger with Dave Lavendar having the honors of naming it. He also got to cut it. The third ten pounder went to lawyer Kit Thornton and his wife Kathleen celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary at Hillbilly Hotdogs.

A hamburger this size requires a special large size bun that is made by Brunetti's. The meat comes from Logan's. It takes two pounds of pickles, two heads of lettuce, three tomatoes, three onions and 25 slices of cheese to cover it.

Hillbilly Hotdog Proprietors Sonny and wife Sharie Knight are behind the making of the large ten pound hamburgers.

Sonny said, "We wanted to have a big burger. We already had a five pounder and someone said make it a double wide. We had a contest to see who would come up with the best name. Doublewide and Boss Hog were the top ones and Doublewide won out."

He said, "The hamburger is expensive to make with all those ingredients. Right now the price is $31.95, but I think it might go up."

"It is a team effort among five people to make it. We need a days notice to make them because everything needs to be fresh. There is about four pounds of bread in it. You can't throw it together."

"The meat it is fresh from Buddy Logan's. It is hard to keep the patty together on it, but we keep it together so it will be big and juicy. It is hard to flip."

For now the Huntington Hillbilly Hotdog location is the only place to get the ten pounder because of the large grill needed to cook it. It may be the only restaurant in the area to serve such a large hamburger. Hillbilly Hotdogs has locations in Lesage and Culloden. A new Lavallette location across from Ace Hardware opened up a month ago.

Sonny said, "If twenty people eat it that is a half pound each. . You could feed 25 people easily on it. This would be good for a family reunion. If they order it to go I advise them to bring a truck."

When asked abut the calories, Knight replied: "If you are going to worry about that , that is like buying a new Cadillac. If you ask about the gas mileage you are not going to get it and it means you don't want it and can't afford it, then don't eat it."

'I would like for everybody to come out and try it. We are not run of the mill. One of my best friends told me twenty years ago I blazed my own trail."

For Sonny and Sharie Knight they have blazed a new trail with their ten pound hamburger that may one of the largest served to customers in the United States that is on the menu.

Alicia Smith from Conway Freight Company arrived in a van to be the first customer to purchase a Doublewide from Hillbilly Hotdogs. Sonny took the large hamburger encased in aluminum foil out to the van for her and sat it in the back.

Kit and Kathleen Thornton were cutting their good looking ten pound hamburger and serving it to family and friends celebrating ten years of marriage. They all were enjoying it.

The Doublewide hamburger does taste good and can be ordered with a customer's favorite toppings. Hillbilly Hotdogs is located at 1501-Third Ave. in Huntington Their phone number is 304-522-0044. They ask for a days notice on the ten pound Doublewide hamburger.
