LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Nation at Crossroads: Common Sense Replaced by Political Correctness

Dear Editor,

This year more than ever, voters need to be educated on those they will be casting their votes for. With our country’s current economic woes, high unemployment, the current healthcare legislation and the looming passage of Cap and Trade, our votes are crucial in determining the direction our country and state will take.

One of the worst mistakes we make as voters, is to vote year after year solely for a particular party or for the ‘good old boys’ we know. As Samuel Adams said, voting is a solemn trust and to vote is a very serious matter. Our allegiance should not be to friends or a particular party, but rather to our country and it’s citizens as a whole. And in breaking this down further, we need to vote for what and who is best for West Virginia.

I think most people sense we are at a crossroads in this nation. We have replaced common sense with political correctness. We have replaced morality with ‘tolerance.’ We have removed God from our schools, our civic events and our high school ballgames. It’s time to draw a line in the sand and stand up for the freedoms this country was founded upon. We need to be pro-active and vote responsibly. We need to check out the voting records not only of our federal representatives, but also those of our local and state governments as well. We should vote not because they are a nice person, serve on a dozen boards, or were able to get funding to an organization we are associated with, but whether they voted our values and what is best for our family, state and communities.

I have heard many frustrated people say they may not even going to vote this year... A wise man once said, that bad officials are elected to office by good people who do not vote. With so much at stake, we simply cannot afford to stay away from the polls. Please join me in voting to ‘change’ the direction we are heading, and vote as Samuel Adams directed - “as one giving accountability to God and country.”
