LETTER TO EDITOR: United States Junior Hockey League Team in Huntington

I read your May 25th story (link: http://archives.huntingtonnews.net/local/090525-rutherford-localjuniorhockeyleague.html) about the possibility of a United States Hockey League team locating to Huntington with great interest, particularly because my wife's mother lived in West Virginia and I spent two years as a radio broadcaster with a USHL team. If the logistics could be worked out, the USHL would bring a brand of hockey that is enjoyable to watch and is quite popular in the markets that are already a part of the league.

However, I must correct you on what you wrote in the last paragraph of your article. The USHL is now a 14-team league, with the addition this coming season of the USA National Team(This team is the one that will play in Ann Arbor, MI) and Youngstown, Ohio. However, the league does not have a team in Columbus, Ohio (That team folded following the 2007-2008 season), nor does it have teams in Minneapolis, Minnesota (The last team in that area relocated to Kearney, Nebraska in 2000) or Dubuque, Iowa (Which left the league in 2001).

The wikipedia page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Hockey_League ) provides a decent background on the league. Also, you can learn more about the league as it exists now, by going to the league's website, http://www.ushl.com. Another excellent source of information is the league's media relations director, Jon Garver. He can be reached at garver@ushl.com.

Thank you for your time.
John Meissner

EDITOR'S NOTE: Web search results still indicated teams in the previously mentioned cities at the time of publication
