LETTER TO THE EDITOR: NRA Distorts Facts: Obama Not Anti-Gun
Like many West Virginians, I come from a family of hunters. My father gave me my first rifle when I was nine years old. West Virginians proudly recognize our heritage, history, and our right to bear arms. We're a state of hunters and sportsmen who own guns and respect the laws that apply to owning them. We also strongly support the Second Amendment. We should all know, athough the National Rifle Association would tell us otherwise, so does Senator Barack Obama. He has stated, "I believe in the Second Amendment. I will not take your shotgun away. I will not take your rifle away. I won't take your handgun away."
Did you know the Hunters and Shooters Association support Barack Obama? They do, and they have good reasons for giving him their support. Obama praised the Supreme Court ruling that ruled the government can't confiscate guns, that Congress can't take our guns away. Obama voted Yes on the Firearm Confiscation Prohibition Vitter Amendment which prohibits the confiscation of our firearms during an emergency or major disaster. And Barack Obama, unlike John McCain, has a serious commitment to our natural resources and access to public lands. Only one candidate supports both our Second Amendment rights and our natural resources. If you have a gun because you're a hunter, of course you also need a place to hunt. As president, Barack Obama will ensure we can keep both.
The National Rifle Assocation has attempted to distort the facts. The NRA tries to cover up the fact that they use their members' money to support the biggest conservation opponents in Congress. The NRA wants to make people believe Obama is anti-gun. A National Rifle Association flim crew went to the the Blacksville #2 Mine in an attempt to coerce miners to speak out against Barack Obama, whom the UMWA endorses. Not only would the miners not speak out against Obama, they halted work on Monday, September 29 in protest of the NRA's actions.
If you are hesitating about voting for Obama because you think he wants to take away your guns and your rights to own them, don't hesitate any longer. Vote for him for all the reasons that make him the better candidate for West Virginia, and be confident that his presidency will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States including our Second Amendment rights.
