Morgantown, WV (HNN) – West Virginia University will join 1,100 colleges and universities nationwide — 4 in West Virginia — in Focus The Nation, an unprecedented nationwide teach-in on global warming solutions. West Virginia University students with the Sierra Student Coalition have planned activities for January 31.

"Focus the Nation has the potential to drastically increase environmental awareness on campus and empower those already attuned. Focus the Nation represents the work the Sierra Student Coalition is doing to encourage WVU to reduce emissions and is an important catalyst to later environmental preservation victories," said Nate Askins, freshman, and FTN Program Coordinator.

Focus The Nation has created a teach-in model centered on three pillars that are considered essential to help communities embrace solutions to global warming: education, civic engagement and leadership.

“Environmentalism is no longer a liberal issue, it’s an everyone issue,” said Joey Bailey, senior and McNair Scholar.

The teach-in will kick off at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30 in room 459 of the B&E Building with a webcast, “2% Solution,” produced by the National Wildlife Federation and aired by the Earth Day Network. Panelists will include Steve Schneider, a climate scientist at Stanford University; Hunter Lovins, CEO of Natural Capitalism and also a leader in environmental justice; and Van Jones, executive director of the Ella Baker Center in Oakland, Calif.

Activities on Thursday, Jan. 31, will include a keynote address by Morgantown Mayor Ron Justice, President of the Faculty Senate Steve Kite and Associate Vice President of Facilities and Services, Joe Fisher.

The SSC first sat down with President Garrison to discuss initiatives that would make the university more sustainable by reducing emissions and consuming less energy in November.

In a recent speech, Governor Joe Manchin asked for West Virginia institutions to reduce their energy consumption 10 percent by the next year. The SSC will continue to meet with local leaders to continue a dialogue on fostering college-community collaborations to enhance environmental responsibility on campus and in the local and regional communities.
