UPDATED: Post Thanksgiving Weekend First: Weekly Movie Comings And Goings

Huntington, WV (HNN) – On the week prior to bountiful Christmas cinematic releases, a lone picture, “Warrior’s Way” enters the marketplace. South Korean actor Jang Dong-gun stars along with Kate Bosworth and Geoffrey Rush in a purportedly visually stunning modern Far East and martial arts western.

The premise --- the world’s greatest swordsman leaves his warrior clan to start a new life in the badlands of America. Why? He declines an assassination assignment from his Far East master, so he’s forced to go into hiding to avoid warriors dispatched to waste him for not complying with the master’s command.

Ninja is the buzz word for “Warrior’s Way” as they take the forms of an old man with a raven on his shoulder , knife throwers, and old western town folk.

Meanwhile, the Thanksgiving openings, Faster, Love and Other Drugs, Tangled, and Burlesque continue.

FASTER: For a vengeance flick, this one offers more than lots of blood and gore. A newly released convict seeks revenge on those who finked out on a bank robbery. His brother died. Now, he’s sending bullets to all who were in on the heist. Dwayne (“Tooth Fairy,” “Other Guys”) stars as the methodological shooter. Complicating the scenario, a cop (Billy Bob Thornton) and a body perfect hit man (Oliver Jackson-Cohen); they’re both after Johnson but who hired the assassin to take out the ex-con? Mechanical , at times, Johnson demonstrates a flair for ethics/compassion along his quest for those directly or indirectly involved in the killing for which he seeks revenge. Best scene: The gunman shows up at a tent revival targeting the evangelist.

LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS: We had an opportunity to observe the cinematic creation of Facebook, now, it’s a haphazard imagination of the marketing of Viagra. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Jamie, the womanizing pharmaceutical salesman who is attractive and charming despite his commitment phobia.

During one of his drug-pushing crusades, he impersonates a medical student intern and meets Maggie (Anne Hathaway), a woman with her own commitment issues. However, he and Maggie’s casual sex meetings lead to caring and potentially love. The film sways from side effects of the aforementioned prescription drug to Maggie’s stage one Parkinson’s disease. Can this coupling survive? Will the homeless man at the dumpster full of Prozac samples find a better life?

Shoving the pharmaceutical sales (anti-depressants and Viagra into the same flick as a committed couple coping with early stages of Parkinson’s seems too disconnected to fit nicely in what’s to become a romantic comedy. Awkward or not, the ‘love drug’ wins, but you ponder where the film would go if it had tackled just a parody on the depression/Viagra sale OR a more dramatic emphasis on the effects of the Parkinson diagnosis, which introduces a daily med routine into Maggie’s life.

UNPREVIEWED:

BURLESQUE: Cher, Christina Aguilera and Alan Cumming star in this story of a small-town girl from Iowa bringing new life into an aging burlesque club/theatre. When Ali steps on stage, she’s soon the star attraction of the revue.

TANGLED IN DISNEY 3D: Princess Rapunzel spent her entire life in a tower, but when she falls for a bandit, she’s going to have to venture into the outside world.

ON DECK :

The Tourist and Narnia Voyage of the Drawn Treader.

On Dec 10, the ho-hum sounding “Tourist” title boosts the ultra star power of Johnny Depp on a trip to Venice to recover from a heartbreak quickly engaged to an Interpol agent (Angelina Jolle ) who has more baggage than a broken heart.

Reese Witherspoon snagged a first (or nearly so) --- the role of a female athlete at an age past her prime. “How Do You Know” has James L Brooks in the director’s chair --- that a job he only occasionally assumes, though his stories and producer credits are plentiful, particularly televised episodic series. Brooks has a history of directorial winners --- “Terms of Endearment,” “Broadcast News,” and “As Good as It Gets --- among the now six films he’s personally directed (others were “Spanglish,” and “I’ll Do Anything.”) This one opens Dec. 17.

December 22 brings the delayed from summer, “Little Frockers” star Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, Teri Pol and Owen Wilson (of which early reports are in the “make the movie” range). Accompanying “Frockers,” the Cohen Brothers commit an unpardonable sin --- they have re-made the John Wayne western, “True Grit.” Oscar winning Jeff Bridges dons the eye patch and award buzz has started building…..

"Tron: Legacy” threatens to be a gamer film that succeeds beyond expectations given its core --- a treasured, before its time classic, “Tron,” in which virtual world collide and encompass. This journey through will be in 3D and might require a few superlatives beyond awesome. It has a Dec. 17 opening date.
