REEL WEEK: White Family Documentary Continues in Huntington
By Tony Rutherford

Huntington, WV (HNN) – A rare treat comes to Huntington. “Wild & Wonderful Whites of West Virginia” has been booked at the Discount Cinema 4. Having attracted attention in NYC after the antics of Jesco in the “Dancing Outlaw,” the new film focuses on other White family members.
“Wild and Wonderful” follows four generations of the White family as they have grown up in Boone County, WV, who all seem to have a knack for mountain dancing, humor, and insane self-destructiveness.
Shoot outs, robberies, gas huffing, drug dealing, pill popping, murders and tap dancing are just a day or two in the life of the West Virginia White’s who are known for excessive criminal ways as well as mountain dancing in a part of the start where corruption, poverty and environmentally and devastating coal mining culture has shaped the brood.
The film has been receiving great reviews as it works its way slowly around the nation. In Los Angeles, any one coming to the theatre wearing tap shoes, having a WV driver’s license, a felony conviction or a visible bullet wound, the theatre admitted you for free.
Johnny (Jackass) Knoxville has directed this well made documentary about which Variety commanded “add this remarkable movie to your must-see list.”
In a Jewcy.com interview, the writer explained, “The Whites live at three times the speed of ordinary lives. They have way more drama than most people could handle without going mad. Death, prison, murders are regular and tragic parts of their lives.”
The New York Times called it “an outlaw celebration” thanks to “raucous music” and songs performed live by Hank Williams III.
New York Magazine writer David Brendel called them “the Hatfields and McCoys all rolled into one, fired up on every pill in the medicine chest.” Cinemablend’s Perri Nemiroff states the family is “very screen friendly” even if for the wrong reasons. Still, the film has been assembled in a manner that their exploits are “respectable and entertaining” without turning the family into circus freaks or exploiting their unusual lifestyle.”
The film begins its run July 30 with five shows daily.
