WEEKEND FIRST: Weekly Movie Comings & Goings

By Tony Rutherford

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Oops… Last week I inadvertently moved up the debut date of Toy Story III (3D), so , my apologizes , as the hot summer air had me skip a week. Pixar’s feature opens June 18.

This week, it’s a little retro and remake magic. The TV action series that featured “Mr. T,” i.e. “The A Team” comes to the silver screen , along with a remake of “The Karate Kid.”

VIEWERS BECOMING SELECTIVE….

At this time last summer, megaplexes and cinemas alike boomed on the holding power of the re-boot of “Star Trek” and the sleeper comedy, “The Hangover.” Those two films helped carry the slower weeks of Summer 2009, just as “Avatar” added spike after the Christmas holidays to the January 2010 grosses.

However, as the recession took hold, Hollywood appeared, as usual, virtually immune, if not a winner in a marketplace of business disasters. But, most studios did announce cut backs both in personnel and movie start “green lights.” Those decisions may now be having impact on summer choices.

Actually, Summer 2009 had a perfect storm of balanced kid friendly product, sequels/franchises, reboots, and 3D “novelties” (which at that time the medium was still in the ‘take a look’ phase, absent too much critical examination).

Box Office Mojo statistics provide that between 2006 (1.406.0 billion tickets sold/ $9,209.5 billion total domestic gross) and 2009 (1,412.7 billion tickets sold /$10,595.4 billion total domestic gross), attendance at the movies ranged from 1.34 to 1.41 billion tickets sold . This year to date 564.5 tickets have been sold representing about $4,487.8 billion in domestic gross which includes an average ticket price of $7.95 (versus $7.50 in 2009 and $7.18 in 2008).

For interesting and revealing insight, the Mojo chart goes back to 1980. During that time the largest increase in sales from a previous year was in 1989 (16.4%, the year of the original “Batman”) and the largest dip 11.9% in 1985. Otherwise up or down , the yearly grosses except for 2005’s (-8.7%) and 1990 (-5.9%), any downturns averaged in the 2-4% range, but expansions were grouped over consecutive years and often came in pairs such as 6% followed by a 3-4% gain the next year. ( Click, http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/ for tickets sold.)

But, the number of movies made and in release have constricted. 2009 has 521 flicks; so far this year , Mojo has 214 releases. In 2009, aside from the “Avatar” blitz in mid –December, no film remained #1 more than TWO weeks (except Jan. 09’s “Paul Blart Mall Cop” and the Aug/Sept “Final Destination” both of which tallied THREE #1 weekends) and they totaled (including “Avatar,” “Destination: and “Cop”) only NINE titles.

At the height of pre-summer and early summer 09 competition, “X Men Wolverine” was displaced by “Star Trek,” then “Angels & Demons,” “Night at Museum II ( two weeks), “Up,” “Hangover” (2 weeks), “The Proposal, and “Transformers II.” The Top 12 did not dip under $132 million and peaked at $213 million (May 23-25, 2009).

Dominating May 2009, “Terminator III,” “Star Trek,” “Angels and Demons” and “Night Museum Battle Smithsonian.” June 2009 was dominated by “Up,” “Hangover,” “The Proposal,” and “Transformers II.” By the end of June, all but “Proposal” had topped $100 million with “Trek,” “Up,” and “Transformers” over $200 million and “Hangover” geared to jump the hurdle on July 4 weekend and “The Proposal” would net over $100 million by the July 11 weekend. (Note: By July 5, “Transformers” had $293 million and “Up” $264 million each raked in the cinema bank.)

Leading May 2010, “Iron Man II,” and “Shrek Forever After.” Failing to achieve anticipated audience acceptance, “Prince of Persia,” “Robin Hood,” and “Sex and the City II.” The “sleeper” came earlier than “Hangover,” with “Date Night” sticking with good word of mouth and the 3D, “How to Train Your Dragon,” adding an additional family friendly choice.

The early 2010 summer flick line up has a Marshall C-USA issue --- no depth. That’s why the numerous repeat #1’s. It’s still the second week of June, too early to predict a full summer, especially with “Toy Story III (3D) and “Twilight: Eclipse” on tap in June. Clearly, retro TV remakes scored hit (“Star Trek”) and miss (“Land of Lost”) in 2009.

In addition, films without a pre-marketable lead in (best seller, buzzer like dinosaurs or 3D) have struggled to gain an audience. Even, kid friendly “Marmaduke” has a slow start compared to early projections. When mixing audience demographics and projecting audience anticipation, Summer 2010 has yet to flex its thundering action muscles --- which tend to pull crossover attendance as kids/teens pull parents.

Here are the projected grosses in millions by Box-office (opening weekend/total) for in release 2010 flicks with the June 6, 2010 domestic gross beside the projection which is in millions of dollars :

Iron Man 140/410 (June 6, $291)
Shrek 125/340 (June 6, $185)
Robin Hood 42/125 (June 6, $95)
Date Night 40/125 (June 6, $95)
Sex City 80/140 (June 6, $73)
Prince Persia 52/140 , (June 6, $59.6)
Marmaduke 30/100 (June 6, $12)

It could be the chosen release dates have contributed to the dips --- Every studio mostly avoiding a date when another projected film had the #1 ranking for the week. The result? When the weekends projected tent pole comes in as a marginal blockbuster, there are not sufficient alternative options to push moviegoers to the cinema. Seems to this writer/critic, we’re averaging one film a week short. The audience for the wide variable release has chosen not to “see something again” or “picked the alternate,” instead, they have stayed home (or gone elsewhere).

Aside from the super heroes and 3D, Hollywood has not had a rush of potentially successful new franchises on which to build in the last years. It’s past due to step up the creativity and pre sell buzz. Meanwhile, what’s playing, I think both studios and theater owners may have to resort to a little “showmanship” (i.e. promotions) to lure viewers into flicks that do not have a solid pre-sold audience.

Now, Here’s this week’s line up:

BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ…. Exploding positive buzz for rockin’ good time……Does Tom Cruise still have what it takes to launch “Knight and Day” into a tent-pole spy master blockbuster? … The “Hex” graphic novel adaptation has been getting snubbed and compared to “Wild Wild West,” which at its time was pretty good. The question here is, will audiences want to see a John Wayne heroic dark fantasy set in the West? Pardon me, I’m just askin'……
