WEEKEND FIRST: Appalachian Fest Showings Start April 9

Huntington, WV (HNN) – It’s time for a trek into the world of independent filmmaking. But, the Appalachian Festival has reinvented itself insofar as film showings are concerned. It now occurs over three weekends. Instead of a three day festival with showings that begin in the late morning hours, the festival has arranged for the showing of more films in the evenings.

Free showings begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 9 with “Ed the Undertaker” in Smith Hall 154 on the Marshall University campus. They continue throug the 9:15 p.m. showing of “Maxwell Stein.” You can also watch “The Crimson Mask” and two Young Filmmaker shorts, “ “Closed Doors” (a sexually abused teen returns as an angel) and “September.”

The “Maxwell Stein” feature comes from director Jeff Jones of W.Va. It’s about a washed up silent era filmmaker who acquires a haunted camera at a second hand shop. http://www.appyfilmfest.com/pages/events-schedule.htm#ap9

On Friday, April 16 at the Huntington Museum of Art, the festival in conjunction with Hospice of Huntington hosts the “People’s Choice” Selection Short. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. you can watch and vote on some of the shorts submitted. The one with the most votes will receive an award. Tickets for this benefit are $15 for singles and $25 for couples.

Then, on Friday, April 23 and Saturday April 24, the Festival moves to the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center.

Friday’s line up includes: “Tormentum” (5:00 p.m.); “The Mountain Music Project (5:35 p.m.); “Passenger Pigeons” (6:35 p.m.); “You Won’t Miss Me” (8:35 p.m.) and “Trash Humpers” (10 p.m.). Saturday “Deep Down” and “A Dot and a Line… a Fade” are showing at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. “Cashing Out” rolls at 12:45 p.m. followed by “Mean Parents Suck at 2:30 p.m. Two documentaries wrap the competition, “Dirty Business” and “Pass It On” at 4:10 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. Following the awards banquet, “The Object: The Urim and Thummim” by special guest Jacob Young screens.

We’ll post details as the date nears. For further info, visit: http://www.appyfilmfest.com/pages/events-schedule.htm
