WEEKEND FIRST: Weekly Movie Comings And Goings

By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Careful, lurking within this week’s new openings, a possible middle school semi-reality ‘franchise’ based on student Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) cartoons of bullying and other obstacles including being a tree in the school play. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”

The children’s books (sometimes known as a novel in cartoons) careened off of the educational browser game website, FunBrain, and landed on the New York Times Best Seller List, where it remained for 41 weeks. This will NOT be Harry Potter the Wimp; it’s considered realistic fiction, so go see what the youngsters have to still endure.

However, the remainder of the openings will attract an older crowd, including a new Cinema Exclusive, “The Last Station” (two Oscar noms) and Roman Polanski’s “Ghost Writer.”

Incidentally, Miley could not wait until a normal Friday opening, so she’s headed into theatres on WEDNESDAY MARCH 30 with her ‘tween romantic drama, “The Last Song.”

LAST STATION

Christopher Plummer (Supporting Actor) and Helen Mirren (Best Actress) collected Golden Globe, Independent Spirit, SAG and Oscar nominations for this Russian historical drama which depicts Leo Tolstoy’s balancing of fame and wealth with his own commitment to pacifism, brotherly love and abstinence from physical intimacy.

GHOST WRITER

Although the director can’t set foot or finger in the U.S. unless he wants to wear black and white stripes, Polanski’s story of a ghostwriter completing the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister has opened to brilliant reviews (like, flawless, gem, exhilarating, every shot gorgeous). Features Olivia Williams, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Wilkinson, and Eli Wallach and cinema buff references to “Sunset Boulevard” and “Chinatown.”

BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ…. Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler play a couple reunited by the ultimate , humiliation: He’s a bounty hunter; she’s jumped bail. Now, they are linked until he gets her to jail. Has possibilities, but will it settle for romantic comedy formulas…. Is this ironic, but, another major release, “Repo Men,” kinda overlaps the bringing a person to justice theme, except in this case, Jude Law plays a man who repossesses organs from those who have fallen on financial hard times. Guess what? Law’s character needs a heart transplant, then, doesn’t repossess enough implants, so now he’s a target for repossession. Will this be comedic sci-fic, or, a dark fantasy? One thing for sure, the taking of the removal of the overdue item will likely be gory.

MORE BUZZ BUZZ … 3 DIMENSIONAL tag teams start arriving March 26 as “How to Train Your Dragon” will be followed by the April 2 re-make of “Clash of the Titans.” With “Alice” still leaping wonderfully through underland and “Avatar” still attracting above average attendance, the Battle of the 3D Titans awaits. Fortunately, the demographics are varied…. You don’t need a third or fourth dimension, as “The Last Song” launches Miley Cyrus into more grown up (and leaving Hannah behind) roles, where she’s feisty , just at a romantic innocence age, and has songs to sing…..

Starting March 19 – March 25
