EDITORIAL: Starved for Cash: WV GOP's Party Finances Sagging

While the WV Republican Party leadership wrings their hands over the strong possibility of no quorum at this weekend's state committee meeting in Martinsburg, others in the GOP are seriously concerned about the lack of party finances.

According to contacts within the party, here is the situation:
  • The party, after expenses are paid for the month, will have a little less than $6,000 in the bank;

  • The party still fully intends to hire a new Executive Director to replace the outgoing Gary Abernathy. How long that new Executive Director can be paid on $6,000 is a serious question;

  • The party is closing the State headquarters on July 1 so there will be no “home” for the party, volunteers, the new Executive Director, etc.
While the party does have additional money from the sale of the South Charleston headquarters, it is in a restricted account.

Meanwhile, those who want to see the WV Republican Party moving again note that Chairman Doug McKinney appears to have no overall plan, no fundraising strategy, no candidate recruitment, no outreach to grow the ranks or voter registration efforts, and no media strategy. In short, under McKinney, the Party of Lincoln has become no longer a proud elephant but quite nearly an extinct wooly mammoth.

Is this the extent of McKinney's vision for the WV GOP? Does he want it to die on his watch? Finally, who in their right mind would want to sign up to be Executive Director for an organization that can, at best, pay for a couple of months of salary?

Perhaps it's time for some of those Republican legislators to get involved in saving their party from extinction. Otherwise, the Republican Party of West Virginia is making it all too easy for the Democrats here in 2010 and beyond.
