DEVOTION: O Night Divine

By Beth Bondurant

"Glory to God in the Highest...found wrapped in pieces of cloth...
lying in a manger
".

The holy family experiencing the pain and aftermath of childbirth... now rest in a stable. Dark and alienated from comfort and care, seen briefly by shepherds who are sent to find them there.

In the warmth and beauty of countless cathedrals and sanctuaries, this picture of God with us is reenacted and remembered. Yet our understanding falls short so very quickly and the illusion of life blocks out the simplicity of God's truth.

There is no place we can go without God being with us.
There is no pain...physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually that
God does not understand.
There is nothing greater than God's unconditional love and grace.
Being clothed in God's Spirit brings life more abundant.
Those in need will search for God in you.
God's love will wrap you up for all eternity.

We join with the song of the angels... "Glory to God in the highest..who comes to be with us... bringing peace and Shalom for all who seek and find."

O God... how can we say thanks. You never leave us even when we run away so fast and so hard in our effort to find someone to love us. Help us ... this HOLY DAY... to allow your arms to enfold us again. Help us smell the sweet fragrance of forgiveness... mercy and grace in the savory signs of your presence. Allow us the strength to receive those who are sent to us for welcome and well being... even when our hearts, minds, bodies are heavy...distracted... and self centered. We want to sing and dance the music of Christmas love and be open to the amazing grace and peace you bring. With THANKSGIVING we humbly exclaim... O NIGHT DIVINE!
