COMMENTARY: Hypocrisy Without Limits
By Thomas F. Stark
The headline of a November 3rd newspaper in West Virginia read “Manchin Whips Raese.” An overstatement at best, but the only person or persons that deserve a whipping over that particular Senate race are the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Joe Manchin, and Jim Ball, chairman of the Wood County Democratic Executive Committee. The last and least of whom was interviewed in the waning paragraphs of your “story” in which he was quoted as saying – of all things – that “a lot of people were turned off by Raese’s campaign commercials.” Given the fact that Raese’s commercials were far more fact-based than any produced by the DNC or Manchin campaign, Mr. Ball’s comment can only be called typical of the continual distortions of truth that marked the Democrats’ conduct in this race. The hypocrisy required to make such a statement is unprecedented - even for Democrats.
Mr. Ball, however, followed it up with another distortion that characterized Mr. Raese as “the most negative, arrogant person I have seen in my life… Raese replacing Byrd would have been a slap in the face to everyone.” To the contrary, characterizing Robert Byrd as such an upstanding figure (when his only claim to fame was being the biggest “pork-barreler” in history) is comparable to suggesting (as many historians do) that FDR was some kind of saint that saved the country (when his only real claim to fame was slowing economic recovery in the 30s and saddling the U.S. with a never-ending nanny state). There was nothing negative or arrogant about the way John Raese conducted his campaign. He simply told the truth...a truth that will eventually play out to West Virginia's detriment now that Joe is carrying water in Washington.
The final display of ignorance and Democrat stupidity was Ball's statement that he “(was) hopeful that Raese would go back to Florida.” In so stating Ball attempted to perpetuate one of the most insane claims by the Democrats – that John Raese had a home in Florida or "lives" there to avoid taxes. In fact, the home was, I believe, inherited, and by the way, how many Democrats have homes there, anyway? More than a few, I would surmise.
The greatest hypocrisy of all comes when one realizes that the saddest aspect of the campaign was that uninformed people believed their lies and installed the real tax-evader in the U.S. Senate. Yes, ask Mr. Manchin why his 58 foot yacht isn’t berthed in WV where it would be subject to WV’s personal property tax, but is, instead, securely tied up in - of all places - Florida. Wait…let me guess. He’s a Democrat so it doesn’t count.
