DEVOTION: Pressing Moments

By Beth Bondurant

Everyday holds pressing moments that come and go with various levels of urgency bombarding our attention.

Just the simple necessary elements of our human body that require daily functions can keep us busy in the bathroom or kitchen or even our easy chair.

Children and other family members cry out continually for assistance and care.

Ball games... school... work... weather... schedules for every minute of the day... challenge us with pressing moments not to mention the dreams of the heart that flood our minds with insistent desire.

"Righteousness will build a home in the fertile field. And where there's Right, there'll be Peace and the progeny of Right: quiet lives and endless trust."

Pressing moments become a "fertile field" of possibility... and scripture tells us to prepare for life... a "home" for the heart, mind, body and spirit. Choices are an inevitable part of every day... and God with us brings the righteousness required for peace to come.

"Quiet lives and endless trust" does not guarantee no more pressing moments will come.

God's righteousness fills us with the strength to keep on keeping on even when the "walls come tumbling down". It is the stillness that comes in the midst of a storm.

We've heard it said... home is where the heart is. Building goodness and mercy within the walls of our heart will enable us in every pressing moment to trust in God's love.

O God... sometimes crawling into bed is the only way we have to hide from the fears and frustrations whirling around us and the very ones we love. Come by here, O Lord and build us a quiet place where we can sit with you and be given strength and peace. There are no easy answers in this complex world of choice and chance. Help us find our rest in the heart of love you provide with every breath. You are the only One who knows, understands and can redeem... pressing moments.
