DEVOTION: Over the Horizon

By Beth Bondurant

What lies over the horizon is sometimes blocked by mountains, high buildings, clouds, landscape, darkness, fog, glaring sunlight or hazy heat...keeping us from perceiving what is just beyond our reach.

A new month... a new challenge... a new change...a new resolution ... a new threat ... a new doubt... may come today; we never quite fully see what awaits over the horizon.

Time continuously ticks away... and though we would like to hold it still .. and be able to savor the moment.. too soon it is gone. "This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it."

"Choose this day whom you will serve." Every new challenge requires our consent.

Words from a past TV show ... "Load 'em up and move 'em out."... "captures" that feeling of "Let's get on with it!" We go forward whether we want to or not!

"The very things I would do... I do them not and the very things I would not do...seem to be the very ones I choose." Even when I am determined ... it doesn't always occur.

"Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life." ... but shadow and gloom still linger close by.

"Would that I could throw my arms around you and give you comfort.".. yet why do I continually doubt God's presence... here... there and beyond.

Today begins a new month fraught with challenge and change... new hope... as well as constant fear and doubt. What lies just over the horizon may be a blur... but we are certain God hovers there... waiting to explore and envelope all possibilities.

O God.. it isn't easy to wake up and face what lies over the horizon. Even in the excitement of a new day, we are reminded that the happiest of times are lined with uncertainty. Give us the strength to keep on keeping on when nothing we had envisioned appears. Fill us with hope and healing so that today can be brighter and better than yesterday despite the winds and the rain. Help me believe that NOTHING separates me from your unconditional and eternal love.. nothing here or there or over the horizon!
