DEVOTION: Quiescence
By Beth Bondurant
Life is full of situations that we expect... yet many happen unexpectedly ... both coming with or without intentional quiescence.
We wait with mixed emotions those experiences we envision. Some things come quickly... others drag on and seem to be endless in their arrival.
Usually our heart, mind, body and spirit... churn in various degrees of worry and wonder... question and certainty... fear and courage...faith and doubt... hope and despondence.... prayer and persuasion... acceptance and denial.
"Be patient and wait for God to act."
So easily written... but so difficult to accomplish.
Being willing and able to "fall into the hands of our living and loving Lord" in complete quiescence may not be humanly possible.
Made in God's image... yet fully mortal keeps us in constant turmoil as to what/how we should/could react to daily changes and challenges... to the pain and injustice of life on earth... and even to the joy that comes arm in arm with today's confusion.
"Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; God is the one who will keep you on track."
Calm and hushed... free from anxiety and disturbance... hushed and peaceful.
O God... Why is it that I long for quiescence... yet never seem to quite gain this state of "resting in You". Help me today... come what may... sit at your table and drink in your 'peace that passes all understanding'. Remind me ... however it might be that I can trust in your love and caring. I give thanks for the people and places I find myself in today and rely on the presence of love and gentleness to surround my heart, mind, body and spirit in divine quiescence.
