DEVOTION: Constant Counteraction

By Beth Bondurant

With our knowledge and awareness of God's Spirit constantly surrounding us and moving to bring God's goodness and mercy to every second of the day... it is amazing how so very quickly we can forget even the hint that GOD IS WITH US.

Life is so full of constant counteraction when it comes to love ... healing and hope. Hours and days are filled with challenge and change and we so easily fall into our familiar mode of doubt... fear... struggle and despair.

Our family celebrates twins in one family...and as they were on a video call not long ago it was so evident how fast our contentment and comfort can be counteracted.

One of the twins was happily close to the computer screen and felt such power in his fingertips as they danced around the keyboard. In a few moments the other brother joined in the fun and immediately ... this present happiness turned into fitful cries as now the keyboard had to be shared.

Living together... giving up what we feel belongs solely to us... having to provide what we have to meet the needs of others.... allowing the interference of flailing fingers to counteract our dominance... impedes our constant comfort.

In the Spirit of love... is our only hope.

Memorial weekend is a good time to remember those who were willing to step aside for us... to support and encourage us above their own dreams and desires.

It is a time to give thanks and to recognize our deepening dependence on God's continual guidance and presence in all that we do.

The constant counteraction of this moment can only be endured by God's constant comfort which calls us to loving sacrifice... "the peace that passes all understanding".
