WEST VIRGINIA WILD: Something for All Trout Fishermen
A monthly column by Frank Jezioro
Director, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources
If I had to pick one month to do all my trout fishing it would have to be May. The put-and-take stocking program is ramped up to its fullest in May as our fishery people scurry around all of our trout water putting in all the beautiful trout their hard work produced the previous season. The major streams are receiving weekly stockings and the campers are out in this great weather taking advantage of some of the best outdoor experiences of the year.
Now they can hunt gobblers, catch trout, look at some of West Virginia’s beautiful wildflowers and blossoming trees, and do it during some of the most beautiful time of the year.
While I enjoy the fishing of those cool April days, I look forward to the warm evenings of May. The month of May signifies the end of the season for many anglers, but for the fly fisherman it is the start of some of the truly important hatches. The reality is fishing for me doesn’t really get going until the “bugs” start coming out.
