Opponents of Proposed Belo Monte Dam in Brazil Speak Out

Special to Huntingtonnews.net
with information from Rebecca Sommer

The Belo Monte Dam is a proposed hydroelectric dam complex on the Xingu River in the Brazilian state of Para, one of 258 new dams that that Brazil is planning to build in just the Brazilian Amazon basin.

Opponents say It's a mega monster project that must be stopped. Belo Monte would be the third largest dam of the world, behind Three Gorges Dam in China and Itaipu Dam, Brazil-Paraguay.. The planned installed capacity of the dam would be 11,233 Megawatts (MW), which would make it the second-largest hydroelectric dam complex in Brazil.

Electricity from the dam would presumably power the extraction and refinery of large mineral deposits in Pará, such as bauxite, the raw material for aluminum. The special event in opposition to the project was held at the World's Peoples Conference on Climate Change and Mother Earth Rights, in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
