Charleston, WV (HNN) -- Now that the beginning of the traditional summer travel and vacation season is upon us, the Mountain State has yet another opportunity to welcome thousands of tourists who are looking for a place to explore and enjoy. Regardless of what other states have to offer, we have one aspect of this great state that we will continue to tout, which is our scenic attractions. The tourism destinations here are memorable, enriching and affordable.

If you want to enjoy the great outdoors with the great summer weather, and you want a solid vacation value, consider spending time close to home. West Virginia offers something for everyone: a long family vacation, a quick getaway with a group of friends, or the chance to take a road trip without the hassle of traffic.

A West Virginia vacation isn't attractive just because it's in close proximity and because it requires less fuel - it's an excellent destination with ample opportunities hosted by friendly West Virginians. Take a trip in which you can learn about our state's heritage at historic locations such as Harpers Ferry or the newly renovated West Virginia State Museum.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the John Brown Raid at Harpers Ferry. The John Brown Raid Sesquicentennial is being commemorated with re-enactments, dramatic productions, art exhibits, academic lectures and walking tours, now through December.

The West Virginia State Museum, located at The Culture Center at the State Capitol, is a world-class museum that has been completely and professionally been redesigned. Its grand opening is June 20, which is the state's 146th birthday.

Of course, West Virginia is renowned for its vast outdoor recreation opportunities. From hiking to boating and fishing to mountain-biking, there's an activity that is sure to keep kids and parents entertained. One of my favorite summer activities is fly fishing for trout in one of the hundreds of our mountain streams. It's great fun for kids as well and gives you an opportunity to experience the best of West Virginia's outdoors.

Lodging choices here offer a great deal of selections. Bed and breakfast inns provide a personalized touch and welcoming innkeepers add excellent local knowledge to your vacation plans. But we also have terrific resorts, state parks that offer lodges, cabins and tent and camper accommodations that give each vacation and destination a unique 0D appeal.

Our tourism industry is made up mostly of small business owners who are committed to making West Virginia a top-notch tourist destination and showing their guests the best in hospitality.

I hope you have a very pleasant and enjoyable summer. Keep in mind what the Mountain State has to offer as you plan your vacation. Call 1-800-CALL WVA or visit www.wvtourism.com for more vacation ideas.
