HNN Home The West Virginia Building --
In Picture and Story
by Daniel McMillian
Huntington, West Virginia has always regarded the historical public buildings in its historical districts as an inheritance of a degree of excellence from its legendary architects. All of us experience buildings
in their form, structure, and their aesthetics.

The West Virginia Building located on the Northeast corner of 4th Avenue and 9th Street has been under restoration for several years. Huey Perry has carefully been in the
process of restoring this 12-story landmark that was built in 1924, designed by the architectural firm of Meanor & Handloser, and the builder Robert Archer.

Originally named the Union Bank & Trust Building, the structure is a combination of Italianate and Renaissance Revival elements.

Mr Perry, the owner of the twelve story skyscraper, has carefully replaced
the former metal facade that was placed over the original three-story ashler stone blocks. In doing so he has returned the structure's first three-story's to a former resemblance
of its past glory.

The first floor has served many commercial
purposes and will continue as such in our future.
