“Sweatequity III” at Marshall University
From a press release

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University students have the
opportunity to improve their campus on Saturday, Sept. 21, by taking
part in the third annual “Sweatequity Day.”

Sweatequity is an idea that dates back to the 1960’s, when people
did not have the money to buy their own homes. The idea is for people
to improve their property to develop a sense of ownership for a home
they do not own.

Marshall students can improve and beautify campus to give something
back to their university, President Dan Angel said. Some of the tasks
include painting, scraping gum off sidewalks and bricks, pulling
weeds, sweeping streets and washing windows.

“It allows the students to give back to Marshall by cleaning and
improving the campus,” said Natalie Ray, Student Government
Association Vice President, “especially since MU has provided the
students with the opportunity of higher education.”

Student government has planned a carwash next to Corbly Hall.
Students also will be putting magnetic Marshall decals on cars.

Approximately 400 students participated in “Sweatequity II” to
better their home away from home. This year’s “Sweatequity III”
will be from 10 a.m. to noon. Breakfast and pizza will be available
for students who come out to clean.

“Alumni donate money to contribute to Marshall” said Steve
Hensley, Dean of Student Affairs, “this is a wonderful opportunity
for students to give something back to Marshall,”

The schedule of events for the day is:

·10 a.m. – Students meet at the MU Memorial Student Center for a
small breakfast and to organize the beautification assignments.
·10:15 a.m. – Students begin working.
·Noon – Pizza party at the MSC Plaza.
