NEW ANTI-BULLYING PROGRAM IN CABELL COUNTY SCHOOLS HNN Staff
Nationwide headlines of school shootings in Paducah, Kentucky, Granite Hills,
California, and Littleton, Colorado, have Cabell County School officials taking
action to prevent such tragic occurrences here.
This is "Safe School Week." Staff and students at each county campus
will participate in activities designed to promote safety, respect, understanding,
and working together.
School District Administrators will also be reminding teachers and students about
the county's policies regarding intimidation, bullying, and harassment.
In most of the nationwide school shootings where a student was the shooter, they
indicated later that bullying and "feeling left out" were issues behind
their actions.
Cabell County parents haven't yet seen the new program, but think doing something
to deal with the issues is a good idea.
"Kids get picked on, and schools need to intercede," said Cynthia Shaffer,
28, a Milton parent.
"It's easier to stop violence before it happens."
"When I was a kid, bullying was accepted," added 35-year-old Brett Lambert,
of Huntington. "I can still remember who the bully was, and who the victim
was. I was afraid to jump in because I was afraid of getting beat up. If I knew
other kids and teachers would back me up, we could have helped the kid."
