Special Call Meeting Fails to Attract Council Support
By Art Harvath

Huntington mayor David Felinton failed once again Wednesday to get a city council member to sponsor his $125 Public Safety Fee at a special call meeting of the city council.

The mayor called the meeting to discuss possible ways to avoid the July 1st elimination of 38 city employee positions.

Instead of discussing ideas that might have the immediate effect of saving the jobs, most of the time was spent in asking the mayor why this or that wasn’t done, or why certain B&O taxes weren’t collected.

No one had any kind of immediate plan to save any jobs.

Effective July 1st, 23 police officers and 1 civilian employee of the police department will be layed off. Four administrative and 13 Public Works positions will also be eliminated.

Of note was the fact that council adjorned the meeting and did not allow any public input on the matter.
