Huntington city council elected democrat George Malott as it’s newest member at Wednesday night’s special call meeting that saw one candidate disqualified, another late for the meeting and one candidate refusing to answer any of the councilmembers’ questions.

Malott is replacing district 3 Democrat Chuck Polan, who resigned his seat June 28th.
Council disqualified Republican Liza Caldwell for not meeting the residency requirements of the City Charter. Darrell Ashworth, a Republican was 6 minutes late for the meeting.

Democrat Frances Jackson refused to answer any questions from the council members. Jackson has previously served on the council and is a member of several other boards, including the Huntington Municipal Development Authority.

“I think your minds have already been made up. There’s been a lot of hurtful things that have been said, a lot of back stabbing and I’m not going to participate in this kangaroo interview,” Jackson told the council. Jackson did not withdraw her name, however. She was nominated and did receive councilman Jim Insco’s vote.

Malott was finally elected on the 5th ballot 6-2-2, with Republican Dick Thompson and Democrat Trey Hanshaw voting for Republican George Lambros Sr. Councilmen John Daniels and Larry Patterson, both democrats, were absent. Patterson, who voted for Lambros, was present for the preceding four ballots but left before the final vote.
