Compiled From A Press Release By HNN

They've played for both presidential candidates. Now Huntington residents will have the opportunity to hear area school bands. This week, young artists from across Region 3 and other parts of the state will compete in the 66th Annual West Virginia High School Invitational Band Festival, hosted by Cabell Midland High School.

"It's a very exciting time for the bands," says Rhonda Smalley, Festival Director and Cabell Midland's Band Director. "Preparation has been going on for months and is about to be realized in these activities." Region 3 includes high and middle schools in Putnam, Cabell, and Wayne counties, but the contest is also open to bands outside the region if they would like to compete in the All-Area program and the Grand Parade.

"You'll see the most outstanding school instrumentalists in the state," says Smalley. In addition to the nine high schools and twelve middle schools from our region, students from Ripley, Scott, Guyan Valley, and Duvall High Schools will also be competing."

Smalley says the level of talent at this competition is almost unbelievable. "We're blessed to have more than twenty members of the All State Band in this region," says Smalley. "Many of our students work on their own through lessons or other training to be the very best they can be. It is part of the tradition of excellence in our community."
