6TH AVENUE PARKING LOT PROBLEMS IN THE OPEN

6TH AVENUE PARKING LOT PROBLEMS IN THE OPEN

The discovery of open sewage pipes and a well on the proposed parking lot located on 6th Avenue adjacent to The China Garden is raising quite a stink and some controversy for Public Works director George McClelland.

The 6th Avenue location and its myriad problems were discussed heatedly at Friday's Council work session and Tom McCallister has stepped up to the plate to take action.

After sending a memo to the plumbing inspector this morning, McCallister met with members of the sanitary board this afternoon at the lot. The workers arrived with backhoe in tow to check for anymore lateral sewage lines that run across the lot from the main line located in the alley. Many opened lines have already been found which violates the City Charter, according to McCallister

It was McClelland’s job as Public Works director to see that these problem spots were handled. He could not be reached for comment as he is out of town until Thursday.

McCallister stated that the plumbing inspector should have been there to check the problems a long time ago but was not contacted by McClelland and never arrived until McCallister sent his memo to him this morning. "If the job had been performed properly to begin with we wouldn't have this mess," McCallister stated.
