The fire early Monday morning left much of H. K. Kauffmann Jewelry Repair Center in ruins, and has caused the Keith-Albee Theatre to close until Friday due to smoke damage and cleanup.

The fire, according to investigators today, was caused by electrics inside the building, in the stairwell area that flashed, causing the explosion heard by police officers on the scene.

Fire Chief Greg Fuller told HNN that a 220 watt cable caused the electrical fire.

"Huntington City Fire Marshal, Captain Gary Johnson has ruled the subject fire electrical in origin," Fuller said.  "The fire started from a short in 220 volt run of metal shielded electrical cable in the wall between the jewelery store and a void under the stair well."

Fuller also said the investigators spent a lot of time on the project yesterday.

"Johnson and Police Detective Lanham along with an intern from the Marshall Forensic Sciences program spent much of the day examining the scene," Fuller said.

Tom Sarka, the owner of Kauffmann's, said he hopes to rebuild and be back in business within a few months.

He also said that most of the jewelry that clients had brought in to have repaired was in a safe and unharmed from the blaze.
