HNN Home City Fire Fighters Sworn Into Service

The City Of Huntington Fire Department will swear-in four probationary fire fighters on Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at 3:00 p.m. in the Mayor's Conference room. Mayor Jean Dean and City Fire Chief Greg Fuller will welcome the four candidates to the City of Huntington Fire Department.

The candidates are:

Heath Hesson, 26, from Ravenswood, West Virginia
Adam Woodward, 24, from Luling, Louisiana
Brett Blackwell, 27, from Clendennin, West Virginia
Joshua Porter, 24, from Winterville, North Carolina

Professional fire fighters must successfully complete a one-year probationary period and fire academy training. During the period, candidates must learn basic fire fighting as well as CPR, hazardous materials identification, basic rescue techniques and water safety. Additionally, probationary fire fighters must complete the first year, of a three-year, 6000-hour apprenticeship program monitored by the US Department of Labor. By law, the apprenticeship program is required of all professional fire fighters in the state. Practical and written examinations must be passed after the third year to retain an appointment with a professional fire department.
