A little bit of Broadway is playing in Huntington. But you might be surprised where.
"Godspell" is being performed by members of the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church.
A monster hit on Broadway during the colorful 1970's, Godspell's script is based on the Gospel of St. Matthew. The musical combines music and dance not normally found in a Methodist Church."
Audience members sang along with the performers to the play's hit songs "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord," and "Day by Day."
Those that enjoyed the play Saturday night ranged from the Hippie Generation to kids that weren't even born during the 70's era of Tie Dye, Peace Signs, Richard Nixon, and campus demonstrations..
"I can't believe how all the songs came back to me," said Paul Stapleton, 53, of Huntington. "I don't have the love beads anymore, and can't even grow hair of any length anymore, but this play brought back memories."
Stapleton's granddaughter, Diana, 15, was wide-eyed in amazement. "I can't believe that Pa Pa listened to stuff this cool, she said. "He said he's going to give me his tie-dyed shirt. I can't believe he really has one."
"This play was so cool," said Stanley Eckstein, 17, of Barboursville. "I'm coming back tomorrow."
If you missed Saturday's show, Godspell will be performed again tonight at 7 p.m. Arena seating is $6 for adults, and $4 for children 12 and under, groups of 15 or more, and seniors 55 and older.
Fifty percent of the proceeds from the play are being given to the Paul Ambrose Scholarship Fund at Marshall University.
You can find Godspell at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church at 5700 East Pea Ridge Road near K-Mart in Huntington. To phone the church, please call 304-736-4467.
And if you miss the play tonight, you can always rent the movie. But Diana Stapleton said it's more fun in person.
