In the new film, “What Women Want,” Mel Gibson shaves his legs and puts on pantyhose in order to figure women out. I’m not going to similar lengths. When it comes to finding out what men want for Christmas, I’ll just ask the experts. Toys.
That’s the consensus from Adam at Mack & Dave’s.
He says a good bet would be car audio systems, CD players and burners
(recorders). Their top seller? DVD
players and discs. Mack
& Dave’s, 1010 3rd Avenue, 697-4211. Bryan
of the Harley-Davidson store agrees. “The
number one all-time most popular present for a guy would be a brand new
motorcycle…we’ve delivered a few for Christmas, ” he said.
“Next to that, a new leather jacket.”
He says they have logo T-shirts, gloves, helmets, and chrome accessories
for those who already have motorcycles and gift certificates. Benjy’s
Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, 408 4th Street, 523-1340 Sandy
at the YMCA suggests pampering your significant other with a gift certificate.
“YMCA members can purchase a certificate for a one hour massage for
$28. We also have certificates for
tanning sessions.” While you have
to be a member of the YMCA to purchase a gift certificate, they can be given to
non-members. Membership at the YMCA
costs $408 per year with a $50 building fee.
YMCA,
522-YMCA When
in doubt about, go for the green. Jim
at Glenn’s Sporting Goods, recommends a Columbia jacket with a zip-out liner
for “someone who likes to be out and about.”
But he says you can’t go wrong with anything that has to do with
Marshall University. “We have
Marshall dress shirts, sweatshirts and novelties…our most popular items are
anything to do with the MAC Championship and the Motor City Bowl.”
Jim also recommends athletic shoes for the younger set, but says
middle-aged men appreciate gifts that encourage them to exercise.
“A lot of times, they’re now trying to workout and stay healthy, but
athletic shoes or a warm-up suit is usually something they wouldn’t think
about buying for themselves.” Glenn’s
Sporting Goods, 1051 4th Avenue, 523-7766 Marshall
merchandise is also a big seller at Dan’s Sport Shop. But Greg Casto, team specialist at Dan’s, says baseball
gloves have been very popular. “It’s
cold out now, but a lot of people are looking forward to spring and baseball
season and we’ve been selling a lot of gloves.”
He also says gift certificates are popular.
