Police say they have the man that shot and killed Ben Lucas in custody.
Charles Edward Hatten, 40, turned himself in to U.S. Marshals yesterday in Docks Creek.
After receiving a tip that he was in the area, knocked on the door of where Hatten was staying, and after a delay, he surrendered without incident, according to Lt. Michael Coffey of the Huntington Police.
Lucas and Hatten were no strangers to trouble-or each other. They were indicted as co-defendants in a Circleville, Ohio, drug case involving methamphetamine production and theft. That case was scheduled for trial in September. Huntington Police believe the killing is related to that case.
Lucas' body was found on the night of August 7 in the front yard of his Harvey Road home. Police think Lucas was killed Aug. 6 at about 11 p.m. His body was not discovered until 7 p.m. the following day when someone walking by noticed it.
Hatten was processed at the Wayne County Jail, then transferred to the Cabell County jail.
If convicted for killing Lucas, Hatten faces a sentence of life in prison. West Virginia does not have a death penalty.
