Census Shows Huntington's Population Down Almost 5%, But Most Ohio Towns Across The River Are Up

T. Michael Murdock, HNN News Editor

The new census estimates have been released, showing Huntington's population has fallen from 54,865 to 52,273, over 2,500 people.  Charleston, Barboursville, Milton and Ashland's populations were also down.  Most towns in southern Ohio, however, have risen in population.

Chesapeake's population has risen from 1,275 to 1,314.  Proctorville has risen from 1,843 to 1,926.  South Point has risen from 3,734 to 4,218.  Coal Grove has risen from 2,346 to 2,453.

Ironton was one of the only Ohio towns in our Tri-State area in which the population declined, only fell slightly, from 13,006 to 12,930.

According to the Census webpage, the percent of population change for Cabell County was -0.6 %.  Boyd County, KY was -1.4%.  Lawrence County, OH was -0.2%.

By staying over the 50,000 mark, Huntington will not have to worry about losing federal money due to lack of population.

Charleston was down in population as well, however, it still showed slightly more people than Huntington.  Charleston was down from 57,691 to 54,598, almost 3,100 people.

Again, these are merely estimates from the Census Bureau, but the last numbers the bureau will produce until April 1, 2001.
