Ashland Community College’s Mansbach Library celebrated the start of spring and National Library Week Tuesday, April 10.    Although National Library Week was officially celebrated last week, Director of Library Services, Carol Greene, told HNN “It was more convenient to end it today.”  And what a day it was.  The sun was shining and the hot muggy weather created a perfect day to bring out all the students in their spring attire, signaling that spring was indeed being celebrated at ACC.

Faculty, staff, students and the community turned out to partake of cake, cookies, and drinks, served in the Libby Callihan Waltholt room.  Everyone was encouraged to sign up for door prizes in the main library.  Various books ranging from science, romance and cookbooks were offered as door prizes. Two of the books were donated by the Jesse Stuart foundation.  Also included in the giveaway were spring baskets filled with mugs, stuffed animals, chocolate, coffee, and more.

Library tours were offered for those who were unfamiliar with this library.  New titles were available to browse for those interested in the latest arrivals.  The entrance hall was decorated with student artwork displayed for the celebration.

Regina Twinam, Library Technician, organized the National Library Week events.  Twinam hoped that students would take away “an awareness that we are here and want to help them.  We want them to feel comfortable.  There’s always a fun side to learning.  The students work hard and we want to reward them.”   When Twinam was a student at ACC she was unaware that the Mansbach library was equipped with books and other resources geared toward classes offered at ACC.   Twinam wanted the students to be aware that “the library offers electronic resources (and to) realize the variety we offer.”

Students appeared to be the main focus at this party.  Many took advantage of the free food and drinks.  They were also eager to register for the door prizes.  Twinam told HNN “The Mansbach library provides a relaxed atmosphere to show and teach.  It is a good learning environment.  I make it feel like home.  I invite them in and treat them (students) to feel at home.”  If the student turnout was any indication of the relaxed and inviting atmosphere, then the library is accomplishing that goal.
