Marshall pledges support to inland waterways industry

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University President Dan Angel and Vicki Riley, Provost of MU's Community and Technical College, signed a proclamation last week, pledging their commitment to support the needs of the inland waterways industry.

Rear Admiral Roy J. Casto, Commander of the Eighth Coast Guard District and Commander of the Maritime Defense Command Eight, headquartered in New Orleans, attended the signing in Angel's office.

Casto also presented Angel with a letter recognizing Marshall's accomplishments in support of both Coast Guard and maritime industry activities. Robert Plymale, Director of the Nick J. Rahall II Appalachian Transportation Institute, also attended the signing.

The proclamation cited a number of initiatives by Marshall that recognize the value of the Community College's Inland Waterways Academy and MU's designation as a University Transportation Center.

Marshall's Inland Waterways Academy provides a number of courses in support of the inland maritime industry, such as cooking schools, a deckhand course, safety seminars, fire safety and safety management courses.

For more information, contact Dana Robertson, Coordinator of the Inland Waterways Academy, at (304) 697-5616.

Dr. Paul W. Whear to receive honorary doctorate from Marquette

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Dr. Paul W. Whear, Professor Emeritus of Music at Marshall University, will be awarded an honorary doctorate by Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisc., on Sunday, May 19. Dr. Whear is a 1946 Marquette alumnus.

Dr. Whear, a prolific composer who was founder of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, is well known not only in Huntington, but nationally and internationally, said Dr. Elizabeth Reed Smith, professor of violin at Marshall.

Dr. Smith said Dr. Whear's published compositions number in the hundreds. He has received numerous commissions to compose works, including a fanfare for the Calgary Olympics. His compositions have been recorded by the London Symphony and other professional ensembles. He wrote the anthem of the Naval R.O.T.C., which is still used today.

Since his retirement from the Marshall faculty about a decade ago, Dr. Whear has been traveling extensively - for pleasure and for professional reasons. He attends many music conferences on behalf of his publisher and remains active on the local music scene. Dr. Whear guest-conducted a Huntington Symphony concert in 2001, and he plays bass regularly in the Marshall Orchestra.

Marquette's commencement ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Bradley Center.
