Water Pipe Bursts In "Fixed" Hal Greer Hole, Block Inaccessible Again
By T. Michael Murdock, HNN News Editor

January 10, 2001
Not 24 hours after the block between 6th Ave. and 7th Ave. on Hal Greer Blvd. was re-opened after the sewer work was completed, the land finally settled back down and the main water pipe blew up.

Water spilled both down the street toward 6th Avenue and up to 7th Avenue, and the WV Water Company shut off water in the four block radius.

"It's not a good thing," a Water Company employee told HNN.  "We've got the equivalent of a 7-inch pump over there now and we don't know if it's going to be enough."

The Water Company employees also didn't know exactly what caused it, but said it more than likely that the ground shifted after the hole was filled.

"It's our water running into the street," the employee said.  "I wish it was sewer water.  That way I could be at home in bed."

The Water Company employees seemed tired.

While turning off the water valves further down Hal Greer, a valve broke and began spilling small amounts of water into the intersection of 4th Avenue and Hal Greer as well.
